As world leaders prepare to talk tough on climate change in New York City, the stark lack of progress made so far in tackling the problem is revealed
Gordon McGlone's insight:

||Presidents, prime ministers and ministers flying into New York City on Tuesday for a one-day United Nations summit on climate change have their work cut out for them. And this is why. As the graph above shows, despite everything they have done so far, we are on a clear course to extreme global warming.||

Just 17% of England's rivers are judged to be in good health, according to "shocking" figures
Gordon McGlone's insight:

Our rivers are in a poor state and inadequate remediation work is underway to tackle the problem.  Moreover chronic problems relating to agricutural run off, river channel barriers and  soil erosion remain unchallenged by the Environment Agency.  This is a wake up call to action.  Our fish stocks are in decline; failing river health can not be ignored.

Gordon McGlone's insight:

The UK track record for inshore marine conservation is third class.  This government has ducked and dived and not honoured its commitments to take action using the lame 'economic' impacts argument.  Waiting for ecological impact is a daft, short sighted and deeply flawed mind set.

Balkan dam boom threatens Europe’s last wild waterways

Environmental concerns have pushed one flagship dam project to the brink of cancellation but a ‘gold rush on the rivers’ of south-east Europe puts these unique ecosystems and their wildlife, including the critically endangered Balkan lynx, in jeopardy
Gordon McGlone's insight:

Nature taken for granted once again:-

“What we have here in the Balkans at the moment is a gold rush on the rivers,” says Ulrich Eichelmann, the director of RiverWatch, an Austria-based NGO. “I sometimes think the western countries that are financially supporting this degradation process have no idea what they are destroying. There is nothing in Europe remotely like this river system.”

In Defence of Life - standing up against the lust for culling wildlife | Leading for Nature | Scoop.it
British officialdom and those they serve are obsessed with the killing of wildlife, writes Lesley Docksey. It seems that whatever the 'problem', from bovine TB to the serendipitous arrival of beavers in Devon, the reflex is the same - to kill wild animals. But increasingly, the British people aren't having it. And our fightback is making waves ....
Gordon McGlone's insight:

I agree wholeheartedly -

'"Without the natural environment we will become dead - dead in our minds and souls and, eventually, dead in our bodies because we are slowly killing the earth that is our home, our blood and bone and breath."
